Ronald Carter, PhD

The CEO and President of Carter & Associates - a higher education and non- profit consulting and leadership development firm located in High Point, N.C. He is also serves as a Presidential Sage in the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows Program and an ACE Subject Expert, preparing senior leaders to serve American colleges and universities. From 2018 – 2021, he worked as an executive search consultant with AGB Search LLC., a full-service executive search firm that assists with all aspects of searches for academic and administrative leaders in higher education.

Dr. Carter’s expertise spans leadership development, board development for colleges, universities, and nonprofits, executive searches, executive coaching, team building, scenario planning, institutional advancement, and civic engagement.

Throughout his career in the United States and South Africa, Dr. Carter has been involved with board development, community engagement strategies, and numerous executive searches. From 2008 to 2017, Dr. Carter served as President of Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), a historically Black undergraduate and graduate applied research university in Charlotte, North Carolina. As President of JCSU, he filled 90 executive, dean, faculty, and staff level positions. At the University of the Witwatersrand (1991-1997), he was part of ad hoc executive leadership and professional development teams that identified, hired, and onboarded individuals who could ensure the quality of the University’s mission and continuous improvement during South Africa’s radical transformation. As Coker College’s Provost, he planned searches and chaired or served on search committees for many of the college’s executives, including chief financial officer, severaldirectors, the head librarian, and more than 15 faculty members.

Dr. Carter has chaired numerous nonprofit and community boards and led strategic international, national and community partnerships. Recognized for his understanding of board process improvements, Dr. Carter has facilitated board development/effectiveness retreats at Johnson C. Smith University, California Western School of Law, Mount Mercy University (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Project Row Houses (Houston, Texas), Bennett College (Greensboro, NC), and the Old North State Medical Society (Greensboro, NC). He currently serves on the Bennett College Board of Trustees, as well as the Higher Education consultant for the Texas A&M University-Commerce Division of Academic Affairs and Provost’s Office.

Dr. Carter began his career at Boston University as the school’s youngest Dean of Students. As one of the first Black senior administrators at the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa), he expanded his higher education experiences through progressive leadership positions: Health Services Development Unit Senior Administrator, Deputy Registrar, and Dean of Students. In 1997 he returned to the United States as the Provost and Dean of Faculty at Coker College in Hartsville, SC.

A native of High Point, NC, Dr. Carter graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and philosophy. He earned his Master of Theology degree and Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Boston University.
